Colon Cleansing: What Did the Ancients Know?

Cleansing the colon is an ancient practice. Since ancient Egyptian times, and known as ‘inner cleansing’, a form of colon hydrotherapy has been used. In fact, the enema was considered an essential component of good health that every pharaoh utilized them. Ancient Greeks also practiced it, as well as traditional Chinese and Indian civilizations. Both the Edwin Smith Papyrus (c.1600 BC) and the Ebers Papyrus (c. 1550 BC) — two of the earliest known medical documents — mention enemas in detail. In 500 BC, Hippocrates and his followers began to advocate health by enema as well, as did the eternally popular Galen, some 650 years later.
Excerpt from the link below: Man has been aware for centuries of the necessity for cleansing to live a life of purpose and joy. In the third century Edmond Bordeaux Szekely translated The Essene Gospel of Peace, an Aramaic Manuscript and old Slavonic Text. Here is the incredible account of colon cleansing that Jesus Christ apparently taught and gifted to all that desired salvation. I don’t know whether Jesus actually gave someone an enema, but I can imagine him compassionate enough to have done so. Enemas were believed to cure a wide range of physical ailments and not just those related to digestion and excretion. Headaches, sexual dysfunction, allergies, asthma, childbirth, fevers, even the common cold — all were supposedly helped by a good rectal purging. The enema’s powers were so revered that the procedure itself bordered on the sacred. As such, it was an essential part of many religious rituals in Egypt and elsewhere. What did they know that modern society doesn’t?
It was at the turn of the 20th century that the equipment used today was developed. The premise remains the same – to gently wash the colon to remove waste, exercise and rehydrate the bowel. This encourages a healthy digestive, elimination and immune system.
Why have a colonic? Perhaps the most common reason I see new clients is because they are having uncomfortable symptoms resulting from an unhealthy lifestyle. Often as a result of poor diet and/or being sedentary (although I have administered colonics for athletes too). Modern diets (complete with chemically synthesized ingredients) and lack of movement will eventually affect how our bodies function.
Colonic hydrotherapy works with the natural processes of your body to bring it back to its natural, healthy state. The flow of the water during the therapy not only washes away trapped waste, it stimulates the bowels’ nerves and muscles to encourage regular bowel function. Abdominal massage is also used to ensure the full length of the large intestine is reached for maximum benefit.
Included as part of a healthy lifestyle, colonic hydrotherapy offers numerous benefits, including the following:
- supporting the immune system
- stimulating bile production
- creating an ideal environment for friendly bacteria
- improving the absorption of nutrients
- removing leftover, old waste
- encouraging the bowel to move and function normally
So many clients report feeling more energetic and having improved skin and circulation following their colonics. (We have many testimonials. Check out our testimonials book in our lobby on your next visit!)
